Camden Electric Moorings

Camden Electric Moorings

London’s inland waterways are home to a vibrant boating community, while many other Londoners also use the canals recreationally.

Many canal boaters are dedicated to living in a way which reduces environmental and ecological impacts. However, the use of diesel for propulsion and electrical power and wood or coal for onboard heating produces air pollution which is a risk for public health. The pollution produced by boats is a direct threat to the health of boaters themselves, as well as communities living next to the canals.

The Camden Electric Moorings will help to reduce air pollution and protect public health in the vicinity of the canal, which in addition to the mooring area includes several residential buildings as well as a primary school.

Camden Council is committed to improving air quality throughout the borough for the benefit of all those who live, work, and study in Camden, and this includes improving air quality and protecting the health of boating communities living on the Regent’s Canal.

Camden Council has received £65,500 from the Mayor of London’s Good Growth Fund to reduce air pollution and carbon emissions at a popular canal mooring location near King’s Cross, helping to protect the health of boaters and canal-side neighbours.

The ‘Camden Electric Moorings’ project will be delivered in partnership with the Canal & River Trust and will involve the installation of electrical power supply points along the Regent’s Canal between St. Pancras Way and Camley Street and will enable boaters to use clean mains power rather than relying on polluting diesel engines or generators whilst moored.

Power supplies will be available for boaters without the need to pre-book a mooring space and their use will not be enforced, so boaters unable to connect to mains power will still be able to moor their boats in the Camden Electric Moorings area.
Installation is due to be completed by the end of the year.
