Biodiversity surveys and reports in planning applications

When is an biodiversity survey and report required?

Where your application site is part of or next to a site designated for its biodiversity value such as:

  • Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI),
  • Sites of Nature Conservation Importance (SNCI),
  • Local Nature Reserves (LNR),
  • Habitat corridors and habitat corridor,
  • Sites of Metropolitan Importance for nature conservation and the Blue Ribbon Network which are in the London Plan.

Other thresholds and triggers in the Camden Planning Guidance

Any other sites identified in Relevant Neighbourhood Plans

What information should be included in a biodiversity survey and report?

A biodiversity survey and report  should include the following information:

  • information on the existing biodiversity interests and protected species, and any possible impacts on them,
  • details of any measures proposed to mitigate or compensate for the impacts.

The initial part of the report should be a habitat assessment. An ecological survey should then follow on from the initial survey where it is found there is potential on the site for a protected / priority species to be present.

Further information should then be provided on managing and mitigating impact, as well as potential biodiversity enhancements such as green/brown roofs and landscaping.
The report can cross-reference any necessary landscaping scheme submitted.

How do I submit an archaeological assessment?

If you apply for planning permission online using the Planning Portal, you will be given the opportunity to upload your archaeological assessment. This is after you have completed the relevant application forms.

Before uploading any files, please read our guidance notes for submitting electronic files with planning applications (PDF).

If you choose to submit a paper-based application instead, you will need to provide:

  • four copies of your archaeological assessment
  • four copies of the relevant application forms.
